Active listening is an integral part of communication in the physiotherapy field. The development of positive professional relationships with patients is heavily reliant on the ability of the Physiotherapist to connect with their patients
Active listening allows for me as a professional to connect with patients, as it reiterates that they are the main priority in this process. The main aspects of being an active listener consists of being silent but attentive through nodding, eye contact and paraphrasing to show attention (Thistle & McNaughton, 2015). These active listening techniques allows for me as a health professional to conduct my work as a patient centred approach which helps in enhance treatment outcomes.
(Thistle & McNaughton, 2015), suggests that Active listening skills must be taught as they are essential aspects of communication. Communication in Physiotherapy ensures that the patient and the Physiotherapist are concurrent on the patient’s condition and the needed treatments. Positive therapeutic relationships are being formed.
The information provided guides me in ensuring that I should be patient centred when it comes to overseeing any situation. Active listening will help me demonstrate this concept as being attentive allows for me to build stronger understandings of a patient’s situation.
