The overall relationship between the patient and Physiotherapist should be professional but the concept of empathy also allows for the relationship to be patient-centred (Dinkins 2011). Health professionals must be empathetic with their patients, as it allows for them to further connect and understand their situation and condition.
The eventuate outcomes for the patients as a result of being empathetic towards their situation is the positive relationships that are being formed. The therapeutic relationships allow for the patient and health practitioner to work diligently towards the same goal.
Empathy towards patients and their situation is important, (Bauchat, Serpoian & Jeffries, 2016), reiterates that for a health professional to be empathetic, its vital for the patient-centred care model of practice, due to being mindful of the patient’s situation and how they are feeling.
This reading also refers to the profession of Physiotherapy, as for my future profession it is essential that I am empathetic towards the patient’s situation, as it allows me to step into their shoes. As a result of this concept, I would try to relate to the patient’s emotions and experiences, this can be done through active listening and being attentive.
